YouTube as Social Media

YouTube is unique in the way that content can be presented on it. In most common uses it actually seems to be more of a hosting site rather than a social media site. A place where people post videos related to a practically uncountable amount of different topics and ideas. And looking at YouTube as just a hosting site for content doesn't exactly do the site justice for what it is really capable of. Very similarly to Facebook, Twitter, etc., you can subscribe to channels to get updates on when they upload content. This has led to channels with massive followings, like YouTube's top content producer, PewDiePie, who now has over 57 million subscribers and has uploaded over 3,000 videos. These numbers put into perspective how huge of a following YouTube has on its platform. Entire communities are formed around certain youtubers, maybe even to a larger extent than many other social media sites. YouTube has the ability to be a whole different kind of social media. Unlike Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter the content is not limited by only written words or pictures, but is able to combine all of these into videos and comments on videos. And unlike Vine, the videos can be as long as you want them to be and you can even stream live on YouTube now. This makes YouTube a catch all for all things related to video and other social media sites. Some people may not be on social media platforms like Facebook, but everyone has probably gone to YouTube to look at an old TV clip, a sports highlight, or watch a music video.

  1. What a great post by bringing light to the social media platform, YouTube. I am guilty of thinking of it jus to as a place to hold videos when I need to find something. However, I am so glad you shed some light on the other features of a great social media site!
